FAQs

What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

A dietitian is qualified professional who has the expertise to provide a range of evidence based nutrition services related to nutrition, public health nutrition, policy and research, and community health. Additionally, dietitians have the expertise to also provide individual dietary counselling, medical nutrition therapy, group dietary therapy and food service management.

In Australia all dietitians are nutritionists however nutritionists without a dietetics qualification cannot take on the expert role of a dietitian. It is also important to note that the term ‘nutritionist’ is not regulated and therefore, this title may be used by many including those with limited qualifications in nutrition.

What is the difference between a dietitian and a diabetes educator?

Diabetes education is a specialised extension of a health professional’s primary discipline. The completion of a Graduate Certificate degree recognised by Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) is required to practice as a diabetes educator.

A diabetes educator promotes optimal health and wellbeing for individuals at risk of, or affected by, diabetes, using a range of specialised knowledge and skills including the provision of general nutrition education. However, dietitians are the recommended providers for all aspects of the nutrition management of people with diabetes. For this reason all people with diabetes should be referred to a dietitian for medical nutrition therapy in order to achieve optimal nutritional management as part of their diabetes care.

Janet is both an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) as well as a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE)!

Do I need a referral to see a dietitian or a diabetes educator?

Absolutely not, many clients are referred by their GPs or specialists but you do not need a referral and can simply book yourself in for a consultation.

What do I need to bring along to my appointment?

The more information you bring to your appointment, the easier it is to thoroughly assess your condition and your diet. Please bring along any referral letters such as Chronic Disease Management (CDM a.k.a. EPC plans), pathology test results including blood glucose records and a list of medications you take.
